Carrying Keys

Keys are a staple in almost everyone’s EDC. With so many different ways to carry keys, it’s hard to find an ideal carry solution. While the right keyhook depends on its user’s needs, I think there are a few simple criteria that a hook must meet before being entrusted with keys:

  1. Retention: Losing keys because of gear failure is frustrating to say the least, but it is also a potential threat to your safety and the safety of your family, roommates, etc. Don’t take chances with letting keys to your car, workplace, or home fall into the wrong hands. Your keyhook must be able to support the weight of your keys!
  2. Accessibility: Conversely, keyhooks should be designed to allow for easy but intentional access to keys. Single-handed operation of locks or opening mechanisms seems to be the sweetspot between retention and accessibility.
  3. Durability: A durable hook ensures that abuse from frequent carry won’t compromise retention strength and integrity when they matter most.
  4. Organization: The keychain serves as an excellent way of carrying gear, but its utility suffers when keys and tools get unorganized. A cluttered keychain only leads to inefficiency. Streamlining a keychain may reduce bulk and ensures that whatever key or tool you need will be in its place when needed.
  5. Aesthetics: Most people have keys, and most keys look very similar. It would benefit you to differentiate your keychain from the rest, especially in the event that you need to identify or locate your keys. Think of EDC as just another form of expression and don’t hesitate to reflect some of your style in your gear.

With that said, there are still many, many options for carrying keys. I’ll do my best to blog keys that I think meet these criteria to save you the headache of researching. But remember, the best way to know what option works best is to test it yourself!

Are you content with your keyhook? Submit a review! Still can’t decide? Ask for a recommendation, and maybe I can help.
