Vertx EDC Gamut 18

It’s hard to argue the pure performance of a tactical pack when it comes to EDC with quick access, organization, and modularity at the forefront of its design. But if “tactical” doesn’t suit your style, this new pack from Vertx offers that same functionality in a more discreet style you can take downtown or up the trail. It ditches the all-black look, concealing its MOLLE and hook-and-loop platforms with design cues you’d find on “heritage” hiking packs.

The 18-liter EDC Gamut was already a go-to tactical pack for its expansive EDC-focused feature set. This new colorway draws less unwanted attention with its neutral tones and leather touchpoints, but it’s still every bit as functional. For starters, the front panel stows away into the bottom of the bag, revealing a full panel of MOLLE webbing for adding pouches and other gear. You can also attach gear to the webbing and keep it concealed with the front panel up for a cleaner look while still having your gear ready. Above the front panel is a zippered, top-entry stash pocket for frequently used gear. It has an integrated keyleash for clipping your keychain, too.

The main compartment opens by way of a U-shaped zipper to lay flat, allowing for easy loading and identification of your gear no matter where it is in the pack. There’s a dedicated sleeve for laptops and tablets up to 15”, 3 zippered mesh pockets for keeping your gear consolidated and visible, and more hook-and-loop lining the interior for additional modularity. At the top of the compartment you’ll find an admin panel that can fold out without fully unzipping the bag, making it easier to access on the go. The rear panel unzips to reveal a fully lined hook-and-loop platform for carrying self-defense gear, keeping its tactical functionality intact.

Last but not least, two butterfly-opening zippered side pockets give you additional storage on the exterior of the pack. Each pocket opens to reveal an inner sleeve or admin panel on the body of the bag, with a zippered mesh pocket on the “wing” when opened. Other handy features like a cord-equipped water bottle pocket, a pass-through back panel for loading onto luggage, and quick-release shoulder straps round out the pack.
