The Best Work Backpacks On the Market in 2024

The Best Overall Work Backpack: GORUCK GR2 Dyneema

When it comes to quality, there aren't that many brands I trust as much as I trust GORUCK, and with every new release, they prove they make some of the best backpacks in modern carry history. The GR2 is one of the best representations of the GORUCK quality and is even better in Dyneema. While it is still available in the traditional 1000D CORDURA and X-Pac variants, this new Dyneema variant stands out as the most premium iteration, 15 times stronger than steel at the same weight, and more ultra tear-resistant than the other variants.

This backpack boasts an array of well-thought-out features, including a spacious clamshell opening main compartment with internal pockets for organization, a bombproof laptop sleeve that can accommodate a 16" device, and internal and external MOLLE webbing for modular attachments. The GR2 is also TSA-compliant and ergonomically designed for comfort during extended wear. Its 26L capacity (also available in 34L and 40L) provides generous space and practicality without appearing bulky.

The GORUCK GR2 in Dyneema represents the pinnacle of modern carry organization and craftsmanship, reinforcing why GORUCK's bags are considered one of the best EDC backpacks, and earning its place as the best work backpack on our list. If you’re looking for a reliable no-nonsense work bag, you can’t go wrong with the GR2 Dyneema, and like The Coolector said in their review, the GR2 is definitely not going to let you down when push comes to shove.

The Best Budget Work Backpack: The Ridge Commuter

Renowned for producing top-notch products, the Ridge has consistently delivered on the hype surrounding its name, and the Commuter is no different. The Ridge Commuter backpack is hands-down the best work backpack available on a budget, and like Backpackies said in their full video review, the Ridge hit a home run with this one.

This backpack offers an impressive combination of durability, space, organization, and weatherproofing. Its exterior boasts a robust 900D ballistic nylon construction, complete with YKK AquaGuard zippers, ensuring durability and adequate protection. The thoughtfully designed antimicrobial 210D nylon-lined interior features a shock-resistant laptop sleeve and ample space for your essentials, including a 15" laptop. The multitude of pockets, including a hidden RFID-blocking rear pocket, dedicated power bank pocket, and more, show the Ridge's commitment to practical organization. While the Commuter may appear small, it boasts a 20L capacity, which is the perfect size for a daily tech or EDC bag, and it's really impressive with its slim, compact design. The Ridge Commuter is one bag that should be at the top of your list if you're looking for a budget-friendly work backpack that doesn't skimp on quality and functionality.

The Most Premium Work Backpack: WaterField Designs Tech Folio

WaterField Designs' Tech Folio stands out as the epitome of premium craftsmanship, setting the standard as one of the most premium work backpacks on the market. Meticulously crafted from high-quality materials—1680D ballistic nylon or heavy-duty 15 oz. waxed canvas—with full-grain leather accents, this bag embodies sophistication and functionality, making a discernible choice for those who want the absolute best.

The innovative design seamlessly combines two bags into one: tech organizer and office backpack, which I find most impressive. The tech organizer, with its mini pockets, ensures that cables, adapters, dongles, power chargers, etc., are within easy reach, eliminating the hassle of rummaging through a cluttered bag. The mobile office compartment is equally impressive, accommodating two laptops or one laptop and a tablet in padded sleeves, with ample space for other essentials. The interior of the Tech Folio is lined with plush and soft materials that act as a protective cocoon for your devices. The inclusion of security features like RFID-blocking and discreet pockets for valuable items further emphasizes the premium nature of this backpack.

The Tech Folio is one of the best work backpacks, and if you carry a lot of tech gear/gadgets around for work, I highly recommend the Tech Folio.

This multifunctional backpack is highly versatile and adaptable, seamlessly transforming from a traditional briefcase to a sophisticated shoulder bag and further into a utilitarian backpack, making it the best backpack for work and travel, offering users the ultimate flexibility for their urban adventures.

How to Choose the Right Work Backpack

Finding the right work backpack is crucial for every professional. A well-chosen pack not only complements your professional image but also provides the practicality needed to carry your essentials effortlessly. Here, I'll walk you through some of the things you should look for when choosing a work backpack.

Materials

The material of your work backpack plays a significant role in its durability and overall performance, so you want to prioritize materials that can withstand the demands of your daily routine. Opt for high-quality materials like CORDURA, X-Pac, or leather, as they balance strength, durability, and weight well. Consider waterproof coatings, stitching, and zippers as well because they determine how well your backpack protects your essentials and contributes to the pack's overall durability and functionality.

Capacity

The size and capacity of your backpack are two of the most crucial factors in choosing the best work backpack for you. Balancing these factors is crucial for accommodating your daily essentials comfortably. While 18–22L capacity typically suffices for most people, your specific needs may differ depending on the volume of your loadout and the extra room you need. So, assess your daily loadout to determine the ideal capacity for you. Also, look out for specifications that match the dimensions of the gadgets you might need to carry in the bag, especially your laptop.

Water Resistance

One of the most important things a backpack should do is protect whatever is kept in it. A water-resistant or waterproof backpack safeguards your gadgets, documents, and other essentials from unexpected rain or spills. When choosing a work bag, look for water-resistant materials and features, such as sealed seams and water-resistant zippers. This ensures that your belongings stay dry and in optimal condition during unexpected downpours.

Organization

Organization and accessibility go hand-in-hand, and a well-organized backpack saves you time and helps you maintain your professional appearance. Choose a work backpack with multiple compartments, pockets, and dedicated gadget sleeves to keep your belongings tidy and easily accessible. Quick access top and front admin pockets can also be extremely useful when working on the go.

Comfort

An uncomfortable backpack is one that won't get used regularly, so if you can, try out your choice of backpack and see how it feels when fully loaded up. Look out for ergonomic and well-padded straps, ventilated back panels, or even attachment points for a sternum strap to help with the load if your work demands a heavier loadout.

Features

Consider features that align with your requirements, like materials, capacity, etc. Additional features like anti-theft designs, RFID-blocking compartments, USB charging ports, etc., can add convenience and security to your daily routine. Evaluate these features based on your preferences to find a backpack that meets your professional needs and enhances your overall experience.

Best Work Backpack FAQs

Is it professional to wear a backpack?

Wearing a backpack can be professional if chosen right. You should opt for a sleek, well-designed, and appropriately sized backpack in neutral colors made from high-quality materials. How do I choose an ergonomic backpack?

To choose an ergonomic backpack, look for features that enhance comfort and support, like padded shoulder straps, a contoured back panel, a waist or sternum strap for weight distribution and adjustable fit, lightweight materials, and breathable fabric.

What size is best for a work backpack?

The best size for a work backpack depends on your specific needs, but ideally, your bag should comfortably fit your laptop, work documents, and other essentials without being bulky. A backpack with a capacity of 18–22 liters generally suffices for the average daily loadout.

I own a lot of Evergoods bags and the Civic Half-Zip is the least functional and the least comfortable, by a long way (the CHZ-22 is my only Evergoods purchase that I wish I could take back). The Civic Panel Loader 24 is a nearly perfect work backpack. For larger loads, the Civic Travel Bag 26 is glorious. And the new MPL 22 has become my all-time favorite EDC pack.
