A lot of the people I work with carry old aluminum pots with coals and damp grass on top to smoke out the mozzies. I've found long sleeves, pants, and shoes work best for me but there is also definitely some bug spray and mosquito coils at the camp.

I believe they no longer make the Sharpie pen you have. I also have one and have not seen them in a while on a shelf.
