Fenix E03R Keychain Flashlight

Keychain lights are an easy way to carry backup illumination in an EDC setup, and with recent improvements in both output and functionality, they do so much more than simply light up a keyhole in the dark. The new Fenix E03R offers performance on par with some other larger flashlights in a compact, fob-like design that’s right at home on your keychain. It even offers additional utility from its secondary red LED and the future-proofed convenience of a USB-C rechargeable battery. If you’re on the market for a modern-day keychain light, don’t miss the new Fenix E03R.

The first thing that sets the Fenix E03R apart from your run-of-the-mill, plastic-bodied keychain light is its solid, all-metal chassis. IP66-rated to be dustproof and rainproof, it provides a sturdy shell made to survive the rough and tumble of living on your keychain. The light features a simple, single-button interface on the top of the light. It lets you access four different output levels from the cool white MATCH CA18 LED: a 260-lumen High mode with a built-in stepdown that runs for 45 minutes, an 80-lumen Medium mode that runs for 1.25 hours, a 30-lumen Low mode that runs for 3 hours, and a long-running Eco mode at 5 lumens for 18 hours on a full charge. You can quickly tap the button to check the 200mAh Li-polymer battery’s status, and easily top it up when it runs low via a built-in USB-C charging port on the side of the light.

Aside from that, pressing an holding the button gives you a 4-lumen red reading light from Everlight 2835 LED, which is mounted side-by-side with the white light emitter. This can run up to 5.5 hours on a full charge, and it’s a good warm-hued option for preserving your night vision when reading maps, the time, documents, or instructions in the dark. Another press from that mode switches the E03R to red flashing mode, which can be useful during emergencies as a beacon or signal light. Finally, double-clicking locks out the light, preventing accidental activation in your pocket and during daily use.

The Fenix E03R weighs just 0.78 ounces with the battery onboard, and at just 1.85" long, 0.94" wide, and 0.47" thick, it hangs unobtrusively with the rest of your keys. It’s lighter and smaller than most car fobs yet lets you pack good light output and a useful red light in a durable package. How easy is it for this light to accidentally turn on in your pocket or in a pouch? I have a Nitecore TUP that used to turn on randomly in my pocket.

Accidental activation is unlikely in my opinion. You need to press and hold it for 0.5 seconds to turn it on. The button is recessed as well. I've been carrying it around for a few days and I enjoy it so far and working on a review!

No Micro USB. forget it.

Personally, I'm happy it isn't micro USB. USB-C is the way of the future.
