More than 11 million people in the UK commute to work, with Londoners facing a gruelling 75 minute journey every day, on average. Beat the commute with our top tips on what to take along on your journey to work.

Stepping out in Style

Handbag –Show off your style with a bag that’s both on-trend and large enough to hold everything you’re going to need on a daily basis. Just don’t go too big – no one wants to sit next to THAT person on the train.

Versatile jacket – Depending on the length of your journey, chances are you’ll be freezing outdoors, cramped up against strangers and dying of heat all in one trip. A lightweight trench coat is the perfect commuter choice.

Make-up – Arrive at work looking perfect by bringing along some essential make-up for any touch ups. No need to bring your entire make up bag - some mascara, concealer and lipstick will do the trick.

Comfortable shoes – Forget heels when it comes to commuting, and your feet will love you for it. A pair of Butterfly Twists are the perfect companion for your commute. As well as being stylish, they are lightweight and flexible and their memory foam insoles will cushion your feet on long walks to work. Plus they won’t slow you down on any last-minute sprints to the train!

Hair essentials: A mini can of dry shampoo is perfect for giving your hair a refresh during the day. Carry a hair tie and bobby pins for hair emergencies or changing your look when you’re meeting friends after work. When it comes to hairbrushes, we recommend the Tangle Teezer compact. This brush can tackle anything the weather throws at your hair and comes in a handy case – no more hours of untangling your headphones from your hairbrush!

Transport Sorted

Get the apps: Citymapper is a huge hit with even the most seasoned city-goers. This is one of the best apps you can download to help you get about – with guides and directions available for cities including London, Manchester and Birmingham, as well as many cities in Europe and the US.

Entertainment: One of the upsides of long commutes is time to catch up on your favourite TV shows or books. Invest in a Kindle or iPad and have a library of books at your fingertips, without the weight of carrying a huge book around all day (Game of Thrones anyone?).

Music & Podcasts – Sit back and relax with some music on your journey home. Spotify Premium is a worthwhile purchase if you face a journey with poor network coverage, as you’re able to create countless playlists that you can access offline. Alternatively, download a free podcast from the BBC to help your journey go quickly.

Weather Wary

Wellies – The clouds looking a bit too ominous for your liking? Save your feet – and shoes - from the rain with a pair of wellies. Our lightweight wellies can easily be stashed away in their drawstring bag, so you can switch out of them and store them away while you work.

Weather essentials – The UK is known for its unpredictable weather, where it can be sunny one minute with sudden downpours the next. During the hotter months make sure you wear a moisturiser and foundation with SPF protection to protect you from the sun’s rays, and keep a travel sized version with you to top up throughout the day. As a rule, we say always keep a small umbrella and sunglasses in your bag – you can never be too sure what the weather will throw your way!

Don’t Forget!

Portable charger – There’s nothing worse than being stuck on a delayed train with a dead battery. Invest in an on-the-go charger so you will always be able to get in touch with people when you need to.
