Streamlight ProTac 90

Sometimes a task comes along that the usual tools can't solve. Whether it's an unfortunate situation or a problematic location, a specific tool can often make the difference. An angled flashlight is one such tool, with its ability to get into spaces other lights can't manage. Even better if it's one made by one of the most reliable and popular brands in EDC. When it comes to tight spots, Streamlight's ProTac 90 may be the right angle to get you out.

Streamlight are well-known for their highly reliable and affordable flashlights, offering excellent build quality and performance at the fraction of the cost of many of their peers. The ProTac 90 is no different. Three output modes can be powered by a CR123A battery to provide a maximum output of 300 lumens on High for 1.75 hours, or 125 lumens for up to 5.5 hours when using a lithium AA battery. The multi-fuel capability makes it convenient to trade power for runtime (or more accessible batteries) when out in the field. A rubber switch rests behind the angled head where the ProTac 90's C4 LED sits, allowing you to navigate its stock modes or switch to one of three other programs depending on your needs. All this is housed within a 6000 Series machined aircraft aluminum with black anodized finish, and IPX7-rated resistance to boot.

While the right angle created from the light's design offers illumination opportunities in places where there's little vertical clearance, its shape offers even more EDC-friendly utility. For starters, it's more comfortable and ergonomic to hold when in use, compared to an over- or underhand grip that requires a bit of wrist flexibility. There's also a reason many headlamps make use of an L-shaped flashlight: it means the light's body can stay flush against a headband while still pointing its beam straight ahead. The ProTac 90's included clip also allows alternative hands-free operation by letting you attach it to a harness or strap to keep its output level while still remaining within reach.

Streamlight's ProTac 90 gives you a no-frills, all-business right-angle flashlight that's an excellent addition to any flashlight kit. Pick one up at the Amazon link below.

Streamlight PolyTac X

If there's anyone with experience with putting a reliable light in your pockets, it's Streamlight. Thanks to incredibly popular (and more importantly, inexpensive), high-quality flashlights like the MicroStream, hundreds of EDCers carry their gear. And while their smaller lights get a lot attention, they've got some versatile, bigger lights packing some power, too. The PolyTac X takes their line of handheld lights and packs more power and versatility in a practically bomb-proof build.

The first thing you'll notice with the PolyTac X that sets it apart from its peers is its molded nylon polymer exterior. It's a super-tough material that gives the light up to 3 meters of impact resistance, and comes with a unique stippled texture that locks in your grip. New to the PolyTac X is its ability to take either an 18650 battery or 2 x CR123A lithium batteries to power its C4 LED, giving it up to 600 lumens with 205 meters of throw for up to 3.5 hours, or a 36-hour runtime with its 35-lumen Low mode. Another unique feature is the light's TEN-TAP programming system which lets you select 3 operating modes for the light, changing how it cycles its modes or giving it a single output on High for emergency/tactical use.

While ruggedness and IPX7 resistance are great features, the light doesn't mean much for EDC if it isn't easy to carry. The PolyTac X has you covered with its two-position clip, attached with a washer-style ring that's pretty rare among flashlights. This ensures the clip will never fly off even during extreme use while giving you plenty of options with carrying the light tip up, down, or attached to your hat for hands-free use.

The PolyTac X is unique, versatile, and requires little investment to add to your EDC. Pick one up in 3 colors from Amazon at the link below.

Streamlight MicroStream USB

For years, one flashlight has been a pocket staple, lighting the way for hundreds of EDCers on our site alone. Streamlight's MicroStream AAA had the right size, reliability, everyday performance, and price to make it a truly solid EDC. So how do you make a great light even better? By fixing what isn't broken and improving the rest, as Streamlight have done with the new MicroStream USB. While it looks and carries like the same light you've always known, under the hood it's better than ever, and in all the right ways.

Since the original MicroStream has been around a while, its 45-lumen power output may not be enough for an EDC light in 2018. The new USB model bumps up its levels fivefold, with a High output of 250 lumens for 1.5 hours, and a Low of 50 lumens for up to 3.5 hours. Output is controlled via the familiar tail clicky switch, which now doubles as a charge indicator when topping up. Charging is accessed by unscrewing a sleeve built into the USB's head to reveal the micro USB port underneath, letting you charge the internal lithium ion battery with your power bank or wall plug.

While the new specs adds a bit of length to the MicroStream USB (now 3.87” compared to the 3.6” AAA), it remains a compact and lightweight carry at only 1.2 ounces. It retains the IPX4-rated anodized aluminum construction of the original, with the shape and grooves that give it a familiar grip. And when you need to go hands-free, it keeps the two-way clip that lets you secure the light with equal ease to your pocket or hat.

The old faithful learns some new tricks with the Streamlight MicroStream USB. Pick one up (at a still affordable price) from Amazon at the link below.

Streamlight Stylus Pro COB

Streamlight have been a long-time EDC favorite with a solid stable of affordable, hardworking flashlights. But that doesn't mean they're not able to move with the times. Based on the popular Streamlight Stylus Pro, the new Stylus Pro COB is designed for real work with features to help light the way while you're getting your hands dirty. It's a light that keeps up with the needs and wants of the modern flashlight enthusiast, but stays true to the company's core of great flashlights that everyone can get their hands on.

While designed to look and carry like a penlight, the Stylus Pro COB takes on a different design with the COB (chips on board) array its name designates. This design lines up multiple LEDs to act as floody area illumination instead of the usual single emitter that outputs a single beam. When combined with the Stylus Pro COB's gasket-sealed polycarbonate lens window, the light outputs a diffused, floody beam to the tune of 160 lumens for up to 3 hours, ideal for lighting up a workspace for extended projects or tasks. You also get a 40-lumen mode good for 8.5 hours, as well as an emergency flash mode that runs for 7.

While most of Streamlight's lights have simple features to remain efficient, the Stylus Pro COB packs a few modern conveniences up its narrow sleeves. This includes a USB-rechargeable li-ion battery, tail switch with built-in battery indicator, and an integrated tail magnet so you can position the light as needed. With its slim frame, that means the light can find its way into and illuminate tight spaces while still maintaining a pocketable profile. And thanks to its removable pocket clip, EDCing the Stylus Pro COB is as simple and efficient as its performance. Pick one up from Amazon at the link below.

Streamlight KeyMate USB

Forget what you know about keychain lights. Streamlight's KeyMate USB disguises itself as another key on your keychain, but it's no secret how useful it can be. Bringing 35 lumens to bear, the KeyMate's features give it unique uses that make it ideal as a backup or emergency light. And with its size and spring-loaded attachment clip, it's a no-brainer light to add to your kit.

You won't find the usual LED and reflector on this light. Since the KeyMate keeps its strip-shaped LED on the underside of its “blade,” you can turn it on face down on a flat surface for unique area illumination thanks to the sweeping, floody beam it gives off. With three modes and plenty of runtime (up to 2 hours on low), it's enough light to let you work in a pinch or flash in case of an emergency. Its spring-loaded clip also makes it easy to take the KeyMate off your keychain and attach it to a zipper pull or lanyard, giving you hands-free task lighting or a better location for use as a signal beacon.

There's no bulky battery to replace; with built-in USB charging and an included cable, topping up the KeyMate is as easy as charging your phone. And without a larger battery it stays compact and lightweight at 2.9” and 0.5 ounces, making it an invisible yet useful backup light for your EDC.
