About This Everyday Carry
Branding consultant and chef, from Toronto and living in Antwerp, Belgium.
This is the core gear that comes with me any time I leave the house. Everything depicted here gets used on a daily basis. I lead a very busy lifestyle, working in two very different professions during the day as well as having creative projects in the music industry during the night hours. Although it is a quite utilitarian carry with very simple items, a few of the items hold some sentiment – the watch, ring, and sunglasses.
The watch represents me finally getting out of the watch collecting hobby. I worked for a couple years as a watch trader and dealer, and at a point I owned an extensive collection of pieces. But, during a period in my life when I decided to fundamentally change my lifestyle and open myself to new experiences, I exited that hobby and liquidated my collection to move onto other things (such as moving to Europe and beginning a new career in the culinary industry). The watch has become something of a talisman that represents my shift in priorities and values.
Whenever I travel, the one thing I always like to shop for in the new destination is sunglasses. To me, they serve as the perfect way to both add some new flair into my wardrobe but also to have a memory of that destination/experience every time I wear them. I picked up these Akila Dillingers from a great eyewear boutique during my last visit to Mexico City, and they’ve become my favourite frames to wear on the daily. It’s an added bonus that whenever I put them on I remember the sunny and eclectic vibes of Mexico City’s Roma Norte neighbourhood, which can sometimes help me get through the dreary western European weather.
The ring has the most meaning behind it of anything here, but for reasons I will not go into. I’m gonna keep the lore to myself.
The rest of the carry has been selected purely for utility. The knife cuts, the multitool has multiple tools, the flashlight makes things bright, the earplugs plug my ears.
As long as it does the job reliably and without fuss, it’s good for me.
