The pace counter has 10 antler beads. Each represents 100 meters and all 10 equal 1000 meters. Once you learn your 100 meter or yard pace (how many steps you make in 100 meters. Both on open ground and cross-country. Yes they will vary) you use the beads to keep up with how many meters you've traveled as you navigate. Once you travel 100 meters you slide 1 bead down the lanyard and so on and so on. Once I reach 10 beads down or 1000 meters I usually find a small rock/pebble and place it in my pocket (each pebble represents 1000 meters). This allows for fast easy tracking while navigating through any terrain without losing count for what ever reason.
