Between making your class schedule, dealing with financial aid, and getting ripped off by textbook publishers, going back to school can be a stressful time for many students. Whether you’re a freshman at a new school or you’re getting ready to graduate, the last thing you need is added stress. Every student seems to EDC a laptop for writing papers and submiting assignments, which means that you should get a decent bag to protect it. We’ve picked a few that can protect your laptop along with any other essentials you might need throughout the day, all without looking out of place on campus. From high-tech backpacks to messengers for a commute to all-weather options, we've got your back to school covered.

Bellroy Classic Backpack Plus

Bellroy is best known for their quality leather EDC essentials, but they’ve shown that they can do more than make wallets. The Classic Backpack was made to carry everything the average student needed and the Classic Backpack Plus offers a bit more capacity for us EDCers. This 22L pack comes with internal mesh pockets to keep items like charging cables and headphones organized, has a water-resistant fabric with protective zippers, a quick-access pocket on the front for your most-used items, and of course a padded laptop sleeve that can hold up to a 15-inch laptop. If you want a great bag that’s simple, clean, and effective, definitely check out the Classic Backpack Plus.

Chrome Industries Echo Bravo

You don’t need to be a cyclist to enjoy a quality commuter bag. The Echo Bravo laptop backpack from Chrome Industries is a perfect example of this. This 20L rolltop uses a combination of Nylon and waterproof tarp, so if you get caught in the rain you won’t have to worry about your homework getting destroyed. It can hold up to a 17-inch laptop and has a few smaller pockets along the outside for items like your keys or wallet. A sternum strap helps to keep the weight distributed evenly along your bag, and if you do ride a bike the cross-straps along the outside make carrying a U-Lock simple.

Timbuk2 Commute Messenger Bag 2.0

Whether you’re headed to a job interview and want to look a little more professional, or you don’t want to deal with a sweaty back in hot weather, a messenger bag can be exactly what you need. The Timbuk2 Messenger Bag 2.0 makes a strong case for why you should trust it with your EDC. Besides the plethora of organization options on the inside, it also has a water bottle pocket with a water-resistant bottom to prevent spills leaking into your gear. It can carry up to a 15-inch laptop and it also has a luggage pass-through which you’ll be glad to have on your next trip as well.

Fjallraven Raven 28 Backpack

When you think of Fjallraven backpacks, the first thing that comes to mind is probably their more popular smaller daypack the Kanken. The Raven 28 often gets overlooked, which is a shame because it offers everything you’d want in a laptop bag. You can carry up to a 15-inch laptop in a dedicated compartment while a tablet fits perfectly into the main compartment sleeve. It also has padded shoulder straps for comfort and two quick access pockets along the outside, not to mention that its slim profile makes for good looking all-around backpack. The 28L capacity hits the sweet spot between portable and functional, and since they come in a few different colors you can find one that matches your style.

DSPTCH Bookpack

For those that want to keep a slim profile, the 18L DSPTCH Bookpack is hard to beat. Its simple yet effective design lets you carry everything you need and nothing more. In the main compartment you’ll find separate laptop and tablet sleeves as well as a mesh pocket for smaller essentials. A magnetic Fidlock buckle on the outside pocket keeps your gear secure without sacrificing accessibility either. One main reason this is a solid choice for your school EDC is the tough build: with a water-resistant 1680D Ballistic Nylon construction, Duraflex hardware, and breathable high-density shoulder straps, the Bookpack is made to last.

Arcteryx Granville 16

Arc’teryx makes bags fit for climbing mountains, and if you take that expertise and apply it to an everyday commuter backpack you’ll get the Granville Zip 16. Its discreet profile is perfect for urban settings, but the weather protection on this bag is next-level. It’s made of their water-resistant AC2 material which is topped off with watertight zippers and taped seams to seal out rain. The main compartment has a 15-inch laptop sleeve and at 26 ounces, the bag is super lightweight as well. Couple that light weight with its low-profile contoured straps and it makes for a comfortable carry for a full day on campus.

Topo Designs Light Pack

If you want a lightweight, classic looking backpack that won’t break the bank, Topo Designs has you covered. Their Light Pack weighs just 15 ounces thanks to its 400D cloth construction, but it’s still built to carry anything you might need. The sleeve in the main compartment fits a 15-inch laptop without a problem and padding throughout ensures that you won’t accidentally break your laptop next time you drop your backpack a little too hard. A zippered pocket in the front is split into two smaller sleeves for extra organization of your small essentials, while padded shoulder straps help you carry the load. Whether you’re walking around campus or going for quick day hike on your next weekend off, the Light Pack is a great choice.

The North Face Kaban

The North Face is one of the most well-known bag manufacturers out there, but for some reason they’re often overlooked when it comes to everyday carry. While their mountaineering packs are world-class, their everyday backpacks are nothing to scoff at either. Take the 26L Kaban for example, which uses the same 900D polyester water-resistant material that the company puts into their giant travel duffel bags. It also features dual-water bottle pockets, a discreet front pocket with a secure zip for keeping your important items safe, and a main compartment perfect for notebooks and a spare change of gym clothes. The best feature though is the padded laptop sleeve which has an ejector handle that makes getting to your laptop in a pinch that much cooler.

Mystery Ranch Urban Assault 24

If quick access and neat organization are your primary concerns, then you should check out the Urban Assault 24L backpack. This bag features a minimal design that won’t attract too much attention with a 3-zip closure that makes getting your gear quick and easy. It’s made of 500D Cordura and has YKK zippers which are both well-trusted materials in the EDC community. Inside are two mesh zipper pockets for organizing pens or charging cables, and an external water bottle pocket leaves no excuse to not stay hydrated while running around campus. While this bag can also fit a 15-inch laptop in a dedicated padded sleeve, it takes a step further by suspending the laptop slightly off the bottom of the pack for added protection.

Able Carry Daily Backpack

Carrying around textbooks and a heavy laptop can be a chore, which is why the Daily Backpack by Able Carry focused mainly on comfort and a sleek design for their bag. A cushioned back panel and straps make hauling your gear around just a little easier, and the internal organization ensures that everything stays in place while you get around. You also get sternum straps to help carry heavier loads which can be tucked away for a sleeker look when you don’t have too much to carry. Plus, the unique A-Frame system keeps the bag from sagging down your back. This helps to maintain its silhouette and also redistributes the heavy gear off your lower back.

Patagonia Refugio Pack

Patagonia makes all kinds of bags, but the Refugio 28L backpack checks all the right boxes. Its main compartment features a padded laptop sleeve as well as a dedicated tablet sleeve, while the second compartment is perfect for organizing your smaller items like keys and calculators. Lastly, there’s the front pocket which is just right for gear you need quick access to like your transit card or a few pens. It features a 630D nylon construction that’s been coated with a water repellent finish to keep the contents of your bag safe from the elements and stretchy pockets on the side make it easy to EDC a water bottle as well.

Amazon Basics Backpack

You can get almost anything on Amazon, and backpacks are no exception. The Amazon Basics branded Canvas laptop bag is a surprisingly good deal for any student that wants a quality bag without dipping into their student loan money. It too has a main compartment big enough for books and secure enough for up to a 15-inch laptop thanks to its padded sleeve. A second external compartment offers some basic organization options to keep your tech essentials all in one place while a grid system on the front is great for securing U-locks.

One I’m currently using is the Thule accent 23L. Laptop section, tablet sleeve, hard case safe spot on the top, keeps everything slim while carrying everything I need for classes.
