If you’re up against a quick repair job, chances are you can fix it with a multi-tool from Leatherman. But as the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” The same can be said for Leatherman’s design philosophy when it comes to their newest (sort of) multi-tool, the Bond. It’s based on the original Leatherman PST multi-tool from 1983, but updated with a few, subtle improvements to keep it fresh. The Leatherman Bond brings with it 14 functional tools in its minimal, no-frills design that simply gets the job done the way it has for over 35 years.
As expected on a tool based on the category-defining PST, you’ll find a pair of needlenose pliers as well as regular pliers for general handiwork. For electrical work, you’ll get hard-wire cutters, wire cutters and a wire stripper as a new addition. Its non-locking, 2.75“ 420HC steel blade deploys via a nail nick from the interior of the handle making for a capable cutting tool that won’t appear overly aggressive compared to other EDC knives. For food prep, you’ll get both a bottle opener and a can opener. To wrap things up, you’ll gain access to other generalist tools like an awl, a wood/metal file, a 4” (10cm) ruler and three different types of screwdrivers. Compared to the original PST, a few of these tools swapped positions, namely the 3D Philips head screwdriver moving to the same side as the blade, while both flat head screwdrivers are grouped together on the opposite side.
This might all seem like a lot, however, Leatherman manages to pack all of this practicality into a mere 4“, 5.8 oz package, this way you don’t have to sacrifice utility for weight or space. All of the tools deploy from the interior of the handles in a non-locking mechanism similar to a slip-joint. The handles are contoured so they offer a comfortable grip, even after extended use. To meet the needs of the modern EDCer, the Bond is also compatible with an optional pocket clip for more convenient carry.
The Bond keeps things simple, affordable, and effective for new multi-tool owners or EDCers looking for a compact backup tool to cover the essentials.
