Pilot watches remain popular for EDC due to their iconic style and superior readability. Traditionally called flieger (“pilot” in German) watches, they were designed for pilots in the second World War, and were made in a gigantic 55mm cases with long straps, meant to be used over flight suits and legible during combat situations. The new Orient Pilot’s Sports Watch is a modern take on the flieger, and is an update of the Orient Flight, a popular affordable alternative for people wanting the classic pilot watch aesthetic.

The 42.4mm stainless steel case makes this more wrist-friendly than historical flieger watches, while still maintaining the wrist presence that pilot watches are known for. Wide straps at 22mm contribute to the aesthetic, and come in leather or full stainless steel, depending on which variant of the watch you get. At 11.6mm thick, the Pilot’s Sports Watch wears easily, even under cuffs. The casing is rated for up to 330 feet of water resistance.

For this iteration of the pilot watch, Orient chose to stick with the iconic Flieger B dial, protected by a mineral crystal glass. Known for being easy and fast to read, this variant of the historical pilot watch dial features an outer ring that marks minutes in big, bold numbers, with an inner ring that marks the hours. A bold triangle indicates the top (12 o’ clock) position, making it easy to find the proper orientation of the watch face. A date window at 3 o’ clock remains the only complication on the dial. Inside, the watch is powered by Orient’s in-house Calibre F6722 automatic movement, which features 40 hours of power reserve and seconds hacking, allowing you to better synchronize time with your other timekeeping devices. The watch also allows for manual winding, and winding the crown up to 30 times will let you max out its power reserve capacity.

If you want a solid, easy-to-read everyday watch that features a classic historical dial, the Orient Pilot’s Sports Watch should be on your list. It takes one of the most readable analog watch dials and mates it to a modern and dependable watch case and movement, updating the historical flieger watches to something more appropriate for your EDC. Get it in a textured Grey, subdued Black, sunburst Blue, or clean Tan dial at the link below.
