For many people in the EDC community, Leatherman has been their go-to for multitools, and they’ve enjoyed that spot for decades now. It makes sense after all, the very concept of a compact folding tool with a set of pliers, a blade, and a plethora of other functions started with them. This year, Leatherman has introduced the Curl, which takes its design cues from the Wave+, but pares it down to the most-used tools in the bunch and tosses in an integrated pocket clip for added carry convenience too.

At first glance, the Curl and the Wave+ look very similar, and that’s a great starting point for any tool you might consider for everyday carry. But where the Wave+ has the serrated blade and the saw, the Curl plus goes without, and it saves an ounce in your pocket as a result. Additional weight savings are gained with the removal of the liner lock mechanism on the outside of the tool, and the wire cutters are no longer replaceable.

With that being said though, the drop point blade remains a highly-competent and easy to maintain 420HC, and you can still avail of Leatherman’s 25 year warranty should something happen to your tool along the way. The only other change is the swap between a precision screwdriver bit an an awl for craftwork and rope use in the field.

Everything else that made the Wave great is present: from the bottle and can opener to the removable bit holder, that’s now also compatible with Leatherman’s ratcheting bit extender too. And one big thing that the Curl has over the Wave+ is the pocket clip that comes with the tool, something that you have to pick up for extra if you opt for the other tool instead. It also comes with the standard belt sheath if you prefer.

Let’s be honest: many people, especially people who already have the Leatherman Wave+ are going to see the Curl and not know what to think. But not everyone has (or needs) everything the Wave+ has to offer, and the new Curl offers a vast majority of the experience for less weight, added ergonomic utility, and a lower price point to boot. It’s a great option for a first timer, a gift to friends or family just getting into everyday carry, or as a beater multi-tool that you can take with you as a backup whenever you need it.
