Sleek New Slicers from SOG for 2023

Founded in 1986, SOG is anything but a newcomer to the EDC scene. But in recent years, they’ve reinvented themselves with a fresh look, dedication to modern day materials and features, while keeping their original design process driven by feedback from elite law enforcement, military, and tactical users. The result is a slew of excellent EDC knives and tools to satisfy most EDCer’s needs, from materials to colors to functionality.

In this roundup we’re highlighting some of the brand’s newest and most interesting offerings: The Terminus (an EDC knife we’ve awarded best in show), the ultra-sleek Ultra XR folder, and the Flash series of assisted knives and multi-tools. If you’re looking for practical tools with tactical roots as an upgrade for yourself or a gift for the EDCer on your list, don’t miss these.

Terminus XR Damascus

This new release ushers in the ancient artform of forged Damascus steel to a modern classic in the popular Terminus XR knife. Unlike many other modern knives on the market, the Terminus XR Damascus uses true Damascus steel made the authentic way of folding layers of steel to create its iconic wavy pattern. 10Cr15CoMoV steel, which is equivalent to Japanese VG-10, is folded over to forge the blade, then cryogenically heat-treated for added performance. The result is a one-of-a-kind pattern on the blade resembling waves on the surface of the sea. When paired with its subdued G10 and Carbon Fiber handle, it achieves a classy look without compromising modern features and functionality like SOG's ambidextrous XR lock and rear flipper tab deployment. With a sticker price of under $100, this is a fairly affordable way to experience a one of a kind damascus steel blade in your EDC too.

Terminus XR LTE

For great performance at an affordable price, there’s the Terminus XR. This knife utilizes SOG’s own XR Lock which allows for easy ambidextrous operation. The Terminus XR LTE (light edition) is 30% lighter than the original and has a deep carry pocket clip for a more comfortable carry. It weighs just 2.2 ounces and can be deployed with a quick flick by way of your choice of thumbstuds on the blade or a convenient rear flipper tab. The clip point 2.95" blade hits the sweet spot for EDC portability and usable cutting edge, and the G10 and carbon fiber handle offer a secure ergonomic grip without weighing you down.

The blade is made from CRYO CPM S35VN steel and even when the blade is safely tucked away, it’s only around 4" in length leaving you with plenty of spare pocket room for other small essentials. The Terminus XR LTE comes in a nice carbon and rose gold color, but if you don’t mind adding roughly one ounce to the overall weight of the knife you can also opt for the Terminus XR Damascus. As you’d expect, the blade on this one is made with 10Cr15CoMoV Damascus steel giving your blade a unique look that will set it apart from the rest.

Terminus SJ LTE

The Terminus Slipjoint LTE knife is a great option if you’re looking for an everyday knife. It features a non-locking, slip joint mechanism and a 2.9" blade, which makes it compliant with most local laws. A two-hand opening of the knife via a large nail nick deploys the blade smoothly, while its solid detent ensures it stays closed when not in use. At 2.3 ounces this knife is super lightweight and has a reversible belt clip making it even easier to carry around with you.

The Terminus SJ LTE is no slouch when it comes to build materials either. Featuring premium S35VN steel and reinforced carbon fiber handles and makes it light and thin, two features for a great everyday knife. The Terminus SJ LTE is available in Rose + Gold or Carbon + Graphite to match your unique style.

Ultra XR XHP

One of SOG’s biggest surprises comes in an impressively small package in the Ultra XR XHP. Despite its credit card-esque thin design it still manages to boast SOG’s XR Lock mechanism. The combination of the CRYO CTS XHP stainless steel and a carbon fiber handle help it remain super light at just 1.2 ounces. XHP is workhorse steel similar to D2, inherently corrosion-resistant and tough while still able to hold an edge for minimal maintenance. One-handed use is a breeze thanks to its elongated thumbhole on the 2.8” blade. The titanium pocket clip also doubles as a money clip thanks to its natural springiness, making it an excellent minimalist wallet alternative. If you want something easy on the eyes and slim in the pocket, this premium compact folding knife is worth a look.

Flash AT

The Flash AT is an upgraded take on one of SOG’s most popular models. This assisted-opening knife has been remade to include better steel, a better locking mechanism, and some slick new colorways. The blade measures 3.5" in length which helps it maintain its portability while remaining a useful size for all kinds of cutting tasks. The combination of the jimping on the spine of the blade and the grippy handle helps to give you plenty of control. Deployment of the blade is simple thanks to thumb studs and the patented Assisted Technology (AT) XR Lock is one that SOG stands behind with a lifetime warranty which is always good to see. The Flash AT is available in plenty of different colorways as well, including Concrete, Black, and Petrol Green, to name a few.

You shouldn’t overlook the Flash MT if you’re in the market for a multi-tool. This unique combination of EDC knife and practical multi-tool makes it one of the best ways to cover all your bases with just one item. It features an assisted-opening, 2.4-inch CRYO D2 steel blade for quick cutting tasks and weighs just 4.7 ounces. If you’re looking for a little more out of your daily knife, the Flash MT also features Compound Leverage pliers, wire cutters, a magnetic bit holder and two included bits, plus a flat head screwdriver.
