Interview: Les George, Knife Designer

If you've been following the knife releases of Kershaw and Zero Tolerance the past few decades, then you might recognize the name Les George. He's a knife designer who's been at it since 1992, learning his craft from legendary knifemaker Stan Fujisaka of Kaneohe, Hawaii.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1997, serving for over a decade in various heavy equipment and ordnance roles, and deployed to dozens of countries around the world. His long service has given him a unique take on using and designing tools, and he's put this experience to use with his creations.

2017 marks Les George's 25th year as a knifemaker, known for his clean, military-inspired designs and collaborations with Kai USA. We got in touch with him for this interview with help from our sponsor Zero Tolerance to announce the release of his latest design, the ZT0920, and talk about his EDC, his love of all things knives, and the future of his work.

The Best EDC Gear from SHOT Show 2017

This past week, EDC brands you know and love came together to show off their latest and greatest gear at the industry's biggest annual trade show—SHOT Show 2017.

The show is massive, with literally tons of new products on display within the tactical, hunting, and outdoor industries.

We scoped out some of the biggest names in the EDC scene to check out what they're bringing to the table this year.

In this quick post-show recap, we're giving you a sneak peek at some of our favorite new knives, lights, and other EDC gear we saw that should definitely be on your radar.

8 Custom-Designed Knives You Can Actually Afford

The “holy grail”—it's the elusive, be-all and end-all item at the top of your wishlist that's just outside the realm of obtainable. As EDCers, we've all got that one knife we aspire to own. And more often than not, it's custom made, bordering on “if money wasn’t an option” territory.

You've seen every picture of that knife on Instagram pining for it, you've read every review, and you've even re-calculated your budget over and over again. And after all that, you still can't see yourself dropping two grand on a knife.

But don't worry, there is hope. More and more custom knife makers are teaming up with manufacturers you know and trust to bring their designs much more within reach in the form of collaboration production knives.

We've rounded up our favorite (relatively) affordable grails from 2016 in this guide. With any of these picks, you’re getting as close to all the design, functionality, and looks of a custom, on a blade you can use without worrying about its cost.

Zero Tolerance 0220 Anso

You don't really need an introduction to Jens Anso, do you? The Danish designer and knifemaker has made some of the most unique and desired EDC tools. So when he drops something new, we take notice. His latest collaboration with Zero Tolerance is the 0220, a flipper knife that pairs his distinct designs with ZT's high production quality.

As befitting  Zero Tolerance's premium offerings, the 0220 doesn't hold back on the features. The 3.5” blade is made from Crucible's premium S35VN steel with a stonewashed finish and drop point shape that’s useful for everyday tasks. It uses a ball-bearing pivot to smoothly engage the blade with a flip out from its bead-blasted, titanium handles. The 0220 secures with a titanium frame lock, made even sturdier with a hardened steel lockbar insert. Anso's distinct touches pop right out from the knife, including a high-visibility orange aluminum backspacer with built-in lanyard attachment and decorative pivot.

This is a hefty knife from a heavyweight knifemaker, made in the USA with custom-level fit and finish usually reserved for pricier blades. It's also still fit for EDC despite its beefier size and weight. Now's your chance to own this Anso exclusive, so pick one up at the link below.
