We’ve had our eye on UK-based Wingback’s writing instruments for a while, and we’ve been impressed by their minimal but strong focus on textures and materials that give their pens a distinct industrial design. From their fountain pen to their mechanical ballpoint, they’ve carved out their own space in the machined pen market. The Journeyman is their latest design to join their catalog by way of crowdfunding (already many times over their goal), and serves as an upgrade to the original ballpoint in more ways than one.

The Journeyman both shares a lot of the aesthetics of its predecessor—like its signature diamond knurling on the barrel—while making big strides to set itself apart as a successor. The first and most noticeable change is the presence of a clip, which prevents the pen from rolling off your desk while also hiding some clever details, like the a minimal logo branded into the milled clip, as well as additional purchase to engage the twist crown, which cleverly hides a unique bolt-action mechanism. The Journeyman is also a larger pen at 5″, which allows it to now use the more popular Schmidt easyFLOW 9000 M (Parker G2) refill.

The final piece of the machined puzzle is the modularity of the Journeyman across materials, allowing backers to choose between stainless steel, black steel, brass, and titanium for each of the pen’s components (barrel, crown, clip, and included Pen Rest), and also giving the option for engraving the latter two parts.

There is just about two weeks to back the campaign, with priority delivery options available to ensure your Journeyman makes it to you before the holidays.
