In recent years, SOG wowed the EDC community with a new line of everyday carry friendly knives that in many cases updated their older designs and took things in a fresh, new direction. These new models showcased new technology, like the ambidextrous XR lock, upgraded blade steel and materials, and attractive modern design. This year, they’re building on that strength by continuing to offer more exciting updates to their XR line, and they’ve tossed in some love for those who like to carry automatic knives as part of their daily carry as well. In this guide, we’ll introduce you to our favorite new SOG knives for 2021, and we’ll highlight what makes them so deserving of your attention this year.

Terminus XR LTE

The Terminus XR was one of the highlights of SOG’s new XR line of knives last year, and in this new ‘LTE’ version of the knife SOG took community feedback to heart in order to make a lighter version of the knife that weighs the wearer down much less in the pockets at just 2.35 oz total. The weight savings was largely done by swapping out the G10 liners of the original for more lightweight (and aesthetically pleasing) carbon fiber scales. Not content to leave it there, the Terminus XR LTE also features premium CPM-S35VN steel in its 3" hollow-ground drop point blade, a step up from the D2 steel of last year’s model.

Kiku XR LTE

Similarly, the Kiku XR LTE is an updated version of a knife that they released last year, but now featuring carbon fiber liners in the handle to weigh 25% lighter. This helps bring the knife down to a more manageable 4.31 oz in hand, and with its sculpted handle and slightly-recurved cryogenically heat-treated CTS-XHP stainless steel blade, you can get right down to work once you flip the blade open and lock it in place with the XR lock. Because the pocket clip is reversible, you can take advantage of the ambidextrous nature of the XR lock, letting you carry it tip up in either pocket, ready to go at a moment’s notice.

Pentagon OTF

The original SOG Pentagon was a fixed blade tactical knife, and in 2021 SOG has updated the knife to be an automatic out-the-front (OTF) double edged dagger blade with an addictively-quick deployment and an attention to build quality that goes so far as to eliminate blade play when it's deployed. And because it retracts down inside an aluminum handle with a pocket clip, the new Pentagon OTF is much more compact and easy to carry than its original fixed-blade incarnation.

SOG-TAC AU

SOG’s newest automatic knife features a double-action safety that eliminates one of the greatest downsides to carrying an automatic knife sometimes: having the blade open up inadvertently in your pockets as your carrying the knife. With the lock in the handle engaged, it blocks the button from actuating, preventing it from flipping open. But its smart design also guards against the second pitfall of carrying an auto: not being able to open the blade when a safety is engaged. After all when you’re in an emergency situation, you might not have the presence of mind or the dexterity needed to fumble around with a mechanical switch to get your blade open, and the SOG-TAC AU solves that by letting you pull on the lock itself to actuate the blade opening. The standard version of the knife features a 3.5" D2 tool steel tanto blade, but if you prefer to carry more compact knives there’s a sub-3" compact version and a California-legal special blade that sizes things down to less than 2" in length.
